Dumbbell Pullovers A Forgotten Chest Exercise
www.leehayward.com The pullover is an exercise you seldom see done in the gym anymore. Yet back in the Pumping Iron days of bodybuilding it was a staple in almost everyone’s routine. In fact way back in the old days before the invention of bench presses with upright racks for holding the bar, guys would do a barbell pullover, lifting the bar from the floor to their chest, and then do their bench presses. But gradually over the years this exercise got pushed to the wayside and is hardly ever done by the average gym goer.

@GammaCaeles
You can, but you are limited in your weight choices if you lift weight plates instead of barbells or dumbbells.
Is it equal to do this with a plate?
@Angelbikost
You can use either a barbell or dumbbell, both moves work the same muscle groups.
Pullovers is one of the best for Chest,dont you agree? xD @leemhayward
sorry i didnt watch the whole video and i see you are also doing barbell pullover ok
is barbell pullovers for the chest??
@vleon1012 LOL That is a little homoerotic, not that it matters.
I do pullovers as a finishing movement for my Lats and chest. Its a great compound exercise that shapes your upper torso
Expand your ripcage…lol’d
Your diction is perfect mate. Excellent instructions! A+
thank you so much, I have been confused about the pull over for some time–dumbbell versus barbell and how to position oneself on the bench. I subscribed to your channel –I believe there’s more useful info. I am a woman btw but I think women neglect the chest for the wrong reasons–even those who aren’t afraid to hit the weights! So Thanks! also added bonus was the explanation about the timing of this exercise.
@Twin1O
With your chest workout, you could also do it on a back workout as well because it stretches both the chest and lats.
Where should I add this workout? Like chest days or shoulder days?
@lobzdik
You are right, pull overs work both the Lats & the Chest. It stretches out both muscles.
@chippyjordinson
There are literally dozens and dozens of different workouts that you can follow to build muscle. Do a google search for “Lee Hayward’s 12 Week Workout Program” I cover this topic in more detail in that article.
just a quick question, what is the best way to build muscle?
ive heard of 2 different ways
doing 1 ‘drop set’ (6-8 reps then drop weight and repeat twice) – then 2 max sets of 6-8 reps
or just doing 3 sets of 6-8 reps
or is there a better way?
i do DB Pullovers like you did in the first example, except I lower the DB a little more than you… and id like to say, this gives me a bit of a pump in the chest, but more importantly is one of the most massive exercises for my lats (not chest)! I guess everyone is different
@SuperTX1000
No, you need the bench so that you can lower the arms below the level of the bench and get a stretch.
can you do this without a bench
You can turn this into an awesome tricep exercise if you put the focus into them.
It involves primarily the lats at begin as if you were doing lat pulldowns, and then about the half of the movement when the weight is over the chest the pecs and triceps get involved. It stretches the chest and its good for deep breathing (like before squats) and stretching and for lats or at the end of the workout, but dont be naive that the pecs work really hard here, and since adult sternum is rigid i dont believe it makes the chest bigger, its just anatomy
Good forgotten exercise though.
whenever i do this i fell it in triceps and abs is that correct?
i dont get it,if the ribcage expands does that means it is just staying expaned ? why do you want an expaned ribcage ?i love this exercise
What exercise can help a person build up the chest area just below the collarbones?
@03367164170 yea… you will use many muscles to stabilize your body while working this… same as your forearms can hurt because of squeezing your grip on barbell =)
with pullovers you can pull with chest or back you just need to focus and feel muscles that you want to train…
i know that i sometimes feel traps next day after i did my side delts (=
